Friday 16th June – windsurf **** Levington – sunny periods

F2 Xantos 310 + Tushingham Lightning 8.5 with 44 cm fin.

26.24 kt max., 24.23 kt ave., 14.52 kt mile, 34.10 km., 16.49 kt alpha, 9 kt hr.

After yesterday’s epic longboard sail it was not looking great today with wind lighter than yesterday and dropping during the day. I had a couple of phone calls from Neil Hurrell early who was keen to go but in the end with the wind offshore and the tides not great he decided it was not worth the risk of driving 50 miles. I was not going to bother but the wind stats looked good with the WNW gusting to 20 kts. and the tide now coming in it was looking good for a trip to the River Orwell at Levington as I didn’t fancy the longer journey to Bradfield.
I arrived at the marina driving past a stunning field of potatoes in full bloom and with plenty of water in the river I rigged my big freeride kit. Shortie on I sailed out of the marina entrance and found some good wind having some good broad runs down to the bay. There was a lot of yachts out enjoying the sunshine and good breeze and I had to avoid a couple of ships heading out to sea from Ipswich! There was not much wind down towards the docks so beat up river and found some really good gusts and was pleased with my 26 kt, peak and 24 kt. save :) I got nearly as far as Pin Mill but the wind went patchy so I turned back, shame really as I was having fun racing a small yacht.
So, a good unexpected session out for two and a half hours in the warm sunshine and getting even hotter over the weekend but no wind and then we are off up North in the camper next week – can’t wait, what a top month June has been so as I have been windsurfing 7 times in eleven day :)
